Ammunition boxes

From: Henderty (henderty@oplin.org) | Date: 2005-07-25 13:43:32 UTC-04:00
I am in the process of planting a letterbox with a tie-in to
bookcrossing.com. Near my letterbox, I was going to plant an ammunition box
full of paperback books. Each paperback was going to be baggied, with a
larger baggie (or two) holding the individually baggied books, so in a
sense, they would each be double bagged. I was wondering if anyone out
there has done much in the way of ammo boxes and whether or not my idea
would stay dry. Any input?
I was also considering an ammo box to be used for hitchhikers. Any
experience or input on that?

Ammo boxes are often used for geo-caches; you wouldn't want people to
get confused. I used to use an ammo box as a first aid kit when I was
an EMT. They're pretty airtight, and with double baggies, I'm sure
that the books will stay dry. Good idea, btw.

One baggie per book should be very adequate. I've
found a number of ammo box geocaches and never found
the contents in them to be wet or even damp. I have
one of my own that's been out for a few months and the
contents are in great shape.

I have never seen an ammo box. I wonder if it would cause need for alarm if
someone either saw you planting it or accidentally stumbled across it (ie:
terrorist act, murderer, etc..)?? I always remember that incidence of a
magnetic letter box that someone planted under a mailbox in Auburn? and a
postal worker called the bomb squad because he didn't know what to think of
it. An officer contacted the letterboxer once it was determined safe and he
read the inner contents.

You have a point, if the boxes were to be found accidently, but since
they are hidden, I don't think it would be that big a problem. Just
my $.02

I've thought that myself, however did you see on the news the type of container used for the bus bombs in London? Big see-thru plastic rubbermaid lookin' thing. I write all over the outside of my boxes in sharpie to let the casual finder know what it is.

I agree that if it's hidden well it's not likely to be
found accidently. It's also a good idea to paint the
ammo box so it no longer says "ammunition". Paint it
black or deep brown or deep green and it will really
be hard to see and less likely that a noxer/muggle
will spot it. Might also want to paint the word
"letterbox" to the outside of the box.

I have one box out there in an ammo box. It's been there two years now (in
the rainly PNW) and everything inside has been perfectly dry.

The one I got sealed very well.

It depends on where you hide it. The one I hid is out in the middle of the
woods, actually a tree farm, where people often hunt for turkeys. That's why
it's called "turkey hunt". You wouldn't want to use an ammo can near a
federal building, dam, etc. BUT , I think most letterboxers use common
sense.

I agree - depends on where you hide it. Wild Rover and I used an old ammo box for our Black 47 box. It's way out on John Tom Hill in East Glastonbury so I doubt anyone would accidentally stumble across it and fear the worst. It is amazingly sturdy and seems to be waterproof/airtight. We'll see how it fares up next winter! MayEve

Funny you mention it, because I just bought ($9.99) an ammo box over
the weekend. I have in mind to use it as a HHH. I am not worried
about it being mistaken for a geocache or bomb because I plan to hide
it very well.
